Dear JWC family and friends,
Your friendship means a lot to all of us at John Witherspoon College. Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near (ESV).”
Zach McCulley, guest lecturer in a recent JWC summer class, spoke on the significance of friendships in the life of John Bunyan (author of best-selling book, Pilgrim’s Progress, a Christian allegory originally published in 1678). Here is a brief summary of what Professor McCulley explained.
Often suffering through intense persecution amidst political upheaval and uncertain futures, the English Puritans, and John Bunyan in particular, sought to fortify their faith—and faithfulness—by cultivating godly friendships. Christian friendships are what helped Bunyan persevere in Christian hope . . .
In his Pilgrim’s Progress story, Bunyan explains how godly friends spur others on . . .
- Evangelist is a vital friend who encourages Christian.
- Help pulls Christian from the Slough of Despond.
-
Faithful walks alongside Christian on the journey, and in faith and clear conscience, they give their lives for the glories that await them in Heaven.
- Hopeful serves as a partner for Christian discourse, one to point you away from your past sins, and lead you onward to the Cross, that is, to look to Christ for life and faith and everything that is promised in Him.
Zach’s presentation of exploring the significance of friendships in the life of John Bunyan reminded me of the life of Abraham. Abraham is called God’s friend in at least three Bible passages (Isaiah 41:8; 2 Chronicles 20:7; and James 2:23). Abraham knew he could trust in God, Abraham did trust in God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness, and he was called the friend of God (James 2:23). What do you think about that title for a life-long journey?! Moreover, do you see the value of friendships in your own life? Such friendships point you to Christ and spur you on to love and good deeds. Is there a friend whom you should reach out to today?
As a reminder, registration is still open for fall classes. Fall classes begin August 22. For more information, see the College Website at jwc.edu or call 605-342-0317.
Thank you for your friendship and your support toward the ministry of John Witherspoon College. Your investments help make possible Christian higher education in the Black Hills and beyond. You serve a vital role in making an eternal difference toward preparing and sending students out for service to the church and the world.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
