July 2022 Fidelis Letter from the President |
Dear JWC family and friends,
There are many things that I appreciate about John Witherspoon College—friends like you, the faculty and staff, the students and their families, and the mission of providing Christ-centered classical education for service to the church and the world. Still, one JWC value of particular importance is the emphasis on God’s Word in every subject and for all of life.
The Psalmist praises God for His Word, “All your commandments are truth” (Psalm 119:151). The word for “truth” also carries the connotation of “stability.” Why are God’s commands so described? J. I. Packer in his book, Knowing God, explains,
First, because they have stability and permanence as setting forth what God wants to see in human lives in every age; second, because they tell us the unchanging truth about our own nature. For this is part of the purpose of God’s law: it gives us a working definition of true humanity. It shows us what we were made to be, and teaches us how to be truly human, and warns us against moral self-destruction. This is a matter of great importance, and one which calls for much consideration at the present time.
It was God’s Word that led me into Christian vocational work 50 years ago (also the year when Packer’s book was first published). Now it is God’s Word leading me to pass on the baton to a new president for John Witherspoon College, to Dr. John Swann of Katy, Texas. While I plan to return to pastoral ministry, Dr. Swann plans to move his family to this area in July and begin his ministry at JWC in August. More information about him and his family is included below.
As a reminder, registration is still open for fall classes. For more information, please see the College Website at jwc.edu or call 605-342-0317. The College staff will be on break in July and will be back in the office on Monday, August 1 for the new academic year.
Thank you for your friendship and your support toward the ministry of John Witherspoon College. Your investments help make possible Christian higher education in the Black Hills and beyond. You serve a vital role in making an eternal difference toward preparing and sending students out for service to the church and the world.
Sincerely yours in Christ, |
