February 2024 Fidelis
Letter from the President |
Dear JWC family and friends, For better or worse, February is forever associated with Valentine’s Day. But while we have and hold this day as a commemoration of love, all too often we fail to really comprehend the expanse of the love to which we are called.
Our first love is to be the Christ, but we live in a society that constantly tempts us to forsake him. Perhaps that makes Valentine’s Day all the more an appropriate a name for the holiday; Valentinus (the Latin name of the saint) means strength or capacity. If we are to love the Christ and to cherish a Christ-centered life, we need to be equipped with strength. This strength is built through a daily embrace of our Savior with not even death parting us. Christians are called to build this strength in their worship and church fellowships, but not only in those things. Rather we are called to build our strength through the study of God’s word, the establishment of Christian character, and the application of our faith in every area of our lives.
John Witherspoon College serves an essential role in this arena by providing Christ-centered learning. The college is not only as rigorous as any competing secular college, but also even more demanding since our education reflects the deep calling to serve our God with our best (Col. 3:23-24). This emphasis has always been at the core of JWC’s mission, and for richer or poorer we have held to this mission. It is an expression of our love to God, and our love to our students to provide them the best possible education available. But we know that love demands sacrifice, and we have done so in many ways. JWC has remained disconnected from assets that come with the liability of forcing agendas on the college while remaining committed to allowing our students to graduate debt-free. We have only been able to uphold this commitment because of the generous support of our donors, and we appreciate your loving sacrifice for JWC. I pray that you will continue to remember the vital mission of the college and our need for your support for our college as we persevere forward, for better or worse.
I would be remiss if I completed this letter without reflecting on our third pillar of Christ-centered leading. Our society has undergone massive change in the last generation, with much of that taking place in the last decade alone. It has not resulted in a happier society. To the contrary, we live in a time of cultural sickness. JWC is proud to emphasize the need for our students to impact society and to lead them into spiritual health. In a hurting world, young leaders who can apply the truth of God to their professional, personal, and public endeavors are desperately needed. John Witherspoon College develops such leaders--and will continue to do so for as long as we exist. Under God, this is our solemn vow.
“And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. … Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.” (2 John 6, 9) |
