May 2023 Fidelis Letter from the President |
Dear JWC family and friends, While the context is quite different, the refrain that ‘Parting is such sweet sorrow!’ certainly
rings true for us this month. There is sorrow in the sense that six of the faces that we have become so accustomed to seeing will not be with us the next academic year. On the other hand, the sweetness we feel is not Juliet’s pining over her love, but rather our celebration that the six faces departing from us have accomplished the worthwhile goal of completing their degrees with John Witherspoon College! I would be remiss if I did not take a brief moment to invite you
to the celebration of their achievements this Friday, May 5th at 6:30 pm as we hold our Eighth Commencement Exercise. JWC will graduate five of our bachelor candidates and one associate candidate. Please come, JWC family, and support this success!
I would also like to remind everyone that we will be holding two classes in the May term that will be both impactful and pertinent for a broad swathe of us. If you are looking for a better understanding of the world we live in and the church we serve, I’d encourage you to consider one of our May classes (starting May 15)! And of course, as we are graduating six of our finest students, we’d love to fill in the loss
with many new students seeking a Christ-centered education! If you, or someone you know, feels God's call to obtain a degree, please consider and share with others about John Witherspoon College. We would be happy to speak with you and answer any questions you may have.
But aside from wanting to keep the focus on our Commencement, I felt it was important to briefly emphasize something else: As much as depends on us, we aren’t stopping or slowing down! The success of our graduates highlights the possibilities that we have before us. We celebrate their achievement, but we also recommit to our purpose of sharing Christ-centered learning, living, and leading. We have news to share, and so, like Paul we might declare:
“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.
” (Philippians 3:14-16) |
Eighth Commencement Service
Friday, May 5, 2023 6:30pm |
You are invited to the JWC Graduation on Friday, May 5th, starting at 6:30pm. Graduation will be held at the JWC campus, 4024 Sheridan Lake Road, followed by a reception downstairs (with Jeff Slathar's famous BBQ sliders!)
Dr. John Swann will share the Graduation message, “Having Learned Truth, Live Beauty unto Good”. We will also hear from each of our six graduates during the eighth commencement service. We are so thankful for the privilege of teaching and mentoring each graduate, and will dearly miss each one in our student body.... in our classrooms... in our commons area... and in our worship together. Congratulations to our Class of 2023!
