August 2023 Fidelis
Letter from the President |
Dear JWC family and friends,
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. …. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
(2 Peter 1:3-5, 10 ESV)
As we enter into this new month and the beginning of a new academic year, I am struck by the word diligent. God has richly blessed John Witherspoon College, and while the road that we’ve traveled this summer (with moving campuses, recruiting students, and continuing to build our internal academic programming) has been a rocky one, God has delivered us through them into this new opportunity.
And just as God has been faithful, so too we must be diligent. He has brought us to our new home, but we must not think that the journey is over.
Physically, we began to occupy the new campus yesterday ( August 1st) and will be sharing information about our “Moving Week” for anyone who is willing and able to assist. Moving the campus is a difficult task; we must be diligent in this labor.
Financially, we continue to reach out for ongoing support. A campus move is expensive and college operations require funding. Our commitment to keeping tuition as low as possible means we must be diligent with our stewardship.
Academically, we are preparing for another year with both new and returning students. JWC has earned the reputation of providing quality education and demanding exemplary learning from our students. We must be diligent to maintain this quality both as a responsibility to our students and as a work unto our Lord.
As we enter this new academic year, John Witherspoon College faculty, staff, and students have a challenging but worthy pathway ahead of them. This is the legacy we have as an institute, and we will be diligent to honor it. |
Enroll in Great Conversations |
This semester, our annual course of study begins with a swath of classes that introduce students to classical education and the great conversations that have been going on for millennia. These foundational courses are perfect for dual enrollment or students exploring college level studies.
Courses like Origin of Bible and Old Testament Story introduce core content and categories for biblical study. Introduction to Philosophy and Introduction to Economics provide essential tools and models for thinking. Our literature and history courses (Ancient World, Ancient Literature, & American History I), provide students an overview of key events, people, and classic texts along with historical and literary frameworks to shape an informed, thoughtful student. College Composition I examines the ins and outs of essay writing, so students can articulate views and ideas. For a well-rounded liberal arts education, we also provide introductory math and science courses like College Algebra I and Physical Science. For those looking for something unique, tackling Greek I or Hebrew I enable students to read the Bible in the original languages!
Several of these courses are transferable to SD college and universities, and most of our courses have transferred to other Christian colleges.
We also provide more advanced courses for our bachelor students and life-long learners in the community who want to dive deeper into subjects like the Trinity in Systematic Theology I or Eastern and Western Christianity in History of Christianity I. |
John Witherspoon College is a Christian, classical liberal arts college, located in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. JWC offers affordable, Christ-centered degree programs in Humanities and Christian Studies.
The Fall Semester begins on August 21, 2023. The deadline to apply for admissions has been extended to August 18th due to the delay in the move to our new campus. ! |

"If any country were indeed filled with men, each thus diligently discharging the duties of his own station without breaking in upon the rights of others, but on the contrary endeavoring, so far as he might be able, to forward their views and promote their happiness, all would be active and harmonious in the goodly frame of human society."
