November 2023 Fidelis
Letter from the President |
Dear JWC family and friends,
While I am not particularly known for withholding my thoughts, one pet-peeve that I am particularly vocal about is how our culture has forgotten Thanksgiving. Perhaps because it is not quite so easily commercialized as Halloween or Christmas, the conversation about Thanksgiving has become rather quiet. Yes, we still mention it and yes, we make time to eat one of the largest meals of the year, but the cultural consciousness of being thankful has muted.
As I was considering this reality, I found myself struck by Paul’s words to Thessalonica: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)
Giving thanks is directly connected with two other commands: prayer and rejoicing. As Paul considers what the will of God is for the church, the “this” in question includes all three commands – to neglect any one of these is to neglect the Lord’s will.
With this in mind, I want to express my thankfulness for you. JWC’s friends and family have blessed the school as an institution and myself personally in more ways than I can express. Please know that we are thankful for each of you!
I also want both to commit to prayer and to exhort you to pray as well. John Witherspoon College needs your continued support. National economic downturns, cultural abandonment of Christian values and interests, and unresponsiveness from many churches have led to the closing of many Christian colleges across the country. Institutions committed to truth and knowledge are closing while secular schools that aggressively promote not just non-Christian but fully anti-Christian principles receive not only our tax dollars, but also all too often the young people of the church. For principled Christian higher education to continue, we must have financial support and faithful students. Please pray that we will receive them.
Finally, I would remember and encourage you to remember the third commandment. The third in my list, but actually the first that Paul wrote: Rejoice! Biblically, joy is no mere feeling. It is greater than that. It is a conviction and an awareness that God is in control and that he does indeed work to bring all things together for good to those who love Him (Rom. 8:28). No matter the struggle we have, we can pray with Hope and a sense of Peace, because God is in control. We can lift our hearts and our minds with all thankfulness and pray with all praise because we have an eternal Joy. May this be true of each of us – this month as we celebrate Thanksgiving, and ever beyond.
